Prenatal Care in Our Office

Pre-conceptional Care:  Screening for familial genetic disorders, initiation of prenatal vitamins and physical exam are started one year before pregnancy. Lots of helpful information is given in our Prenatal and Pregnancy planning course.

First Trimester :   The prenatal visits are scheduled every 4 weeks and this is the most important trimester for early prenatal screening. Pregnancy laboratory testing of blood and urine, sonogram for nuchal translucency screening, genetic screening for chromosomal and neural tube abnormalities and discussion of the results and your expected course for pregnancy.

Second Trimester:  The prenatal visits are scheduled every 2 weeks and during this trimester advanced  genetic screening may be needed, testing for genetic abnormalities and diabetic screening and the final sonogram @18-20 weeks are completed, cerclage may be placed, and results are again reviewed. This is the best time to complete your human resource notification and planning of your pregnancy exit from your job. The expected exit date for most companies is the day that you deliver your baby unless you have a complication of pregnancy. For repeat or elective cesarean sections the surgical dates are decided and scheduled.  This is also the best time to complete and have your baby shower, seek out child care and plan for help at home if you do not deliver vaginally.

Third Trimester:  The prenatal visits are scheduled every week during this trimester you should be winding things down and not taking on any additional stress of moving, baby shower planning, and the like. It is a time to focus on your diet, rest, stretching and finishing up last minute items. Testing here will include the screen for Beta-streptococcus and vaginal exams and sonograms if needed.

Labor and Delivery:  This is the final stretch and your attention to details are needed.  If the office is closed and you think that you are in labor, water broke, decreased fetal movement or anything that you think is not normal GO TO THE HOSPITAL @ Long Island Jewish Katz Women’s Center, 3rd floor Labor and Delivery in New Hyde Park, NY.  There our hospital staff will evaluate the problem and notify the doctor of the findings. Don’t eat if you think you have a problem and go to the hospital immediately.

High Risk Pregnancies:  The High Risk Pregnancy follows similar guidelines but with more frequent visits based upon the individual problems.
